The Nationaltheater, located at the central Max-Joseph-Platz, is also the Bavarian State Opera. It was first built in 1651. Around 1800 the theatre was demolished. The new building was modelled on the Theatre de Odeon de Paris 1812-1818 and built by the young architect Karl von Friedrich. The Munich National Theatre was then destroyed twice more and rebuilt according to the old model (in 1823 by fire and in World War II).
The National Theatre (front with monument)
Architecturally interesting in the National Theatre are the Royal Hall, the staircases and the entrance hall. The theatre room itself has a splendid interior design: lots of red, gold and ivory. Today the theatre has over 2,000 seats. It is the most important opera house in Munich. Every year the famous opera festivals take place here. Tickets are expensive and hard to get. Some rich people hire students who queue in shifts for days on end to get the best tickets.
The National Theater of Bavaria has the third largest theater stage in the world with approximately 2,500 square meters. By the way, the largest stage in the world is in most literature sources the Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin (over 2800 square meters). The acoustics of the Munich National Theatre are excellent. Many performances of the Bavarian State Opera are in the Munich National Theater, but some are also in the Cuvillies Theater or the Prinzregententheater. The Bavarian State Ballet, one of the best ballets in Germany, also frequently uses the Munich National Theater for its performances.
How to get to the Nationaltheater Munich (Bavarian State Opera): S-Bahn, U3, U6 Marienplatz and about 500 meters walking distance or the subways U3,U4,U5,U6 Odeonsplatz and 250 meters walking distance.
